Liquid
Appearance
Colorless to yellow liquid
Solubility
Potassium 3,7-dimethyloctan-3-oxide is highly soluble in hydrocarbons and ethers.
Application
Organic base for deprotonations or other base-catalyzed reactions, excellent reagent for the formation of block copolymers. Used as a polar modifier with alkyl lithium to control vinyl content of solution styrene-butadiene rubber (sSBR). Soluble in a range of hydrocarbon and polar aprotic solvents.
Analysis Method
Concentration determined via base titration. Hydroxide/Carbonate concentration based upon modified Karl Fischer titration.
Storage & Shipping
Shelf Life
Four years in unopened, original packaging. Based upon like compounds.
Storage / Stability
Reacts readily with water to form potassium hydroxide and 3,7-dimethyl-3-octanol. KDMO can hydrolyze upon exposure to moist air forming a cloudy solution.
